Nas - "Be Worried" (prod. Swizz Beatz)

Swizz Beatz' "Top Down" was already a decent song in its own right way back on GTA IV, but Nasty absolutely demolished it. This track is from a few years back (Mr. Jones recorded it sometime between Untitled and Distant Relatives), but a lot of people haven't heard it so I'm bringing it back. "Be Worried" may not be as hardhitting as his Stillmatic tracks (let's be honest, few are), but it's a fun song that's an example of an emcee nearly two decades into his career and still near his peak.

Peace, Love, & Nasir,
Nasty Noah

Nas - "My War" feat. Wu-Tang Clan? [Unreleased]

Before anyone comments, I know this song doesn't feature Nas or any of the Wu-Tang. If you listen to the (still very dope) song, none of the emcees sound like Mr. Jones or the original nine. It's one of the great mysteries of the internet. The track has been floating around the web since 2004, labeled as an unreleased Wu/Nas collab and NO ONE KNOWS WHO THE EMCEES ACTUALLY ARE.

It kind of sounds like Jedi Mind Tricks/Army of the Pharaohs. Perhaps it's one of the countless C-list Wu-Tang Affiliates. I'll leave it to a higher ranking Iluminati better conspiracy theorist than myself to figure it out. Perhaps, like Stonehenge, Jack the Ripper, or the reason Friday Night Lights got cancelled, we were never meant to know who or why they did it.

Nas - "What Goes Around" (feat. Keon Bryce)

I contemplate believing in Karma,
If those on top could just break, then we'd be eatin' tomorrow.

Stillmatic has one of the best battle tracks of all time, "One Mic," a song where Nas raps about fellatio in reverse, "Got Ur Self A..." (which has one of the best samples of any song), and countless other classic tracks (well, fourteen if we're counting), but "What Goes Around" is hands down my favorite track. It's the one track on the album that I can never get through without replaying at least 3-4 times.

Awakened by his fued with Jay-Z, the album as a whole represents a renaissance for Nas--a recommitment to the vicious, sharp lyrical style that hadn't been seen since the days of It Was Written. This track epitomizes the album for me. Salaam Remi provides a relatively sparse instrumental (it's basically a drum kit, with occasional guitar and piano samples) and Keon Bryce sings a brief but haunting chorus, but the song's true focus is on Nasty Nas, who just goes off on the track with vicious one-liner after one-liner.

It's not so much the subject matter--the Orwellian critique of capitalism--that keeps drawing listeners back to this song so much as its delivery. You realize, listening to Stillmatic over a decade later, that you're listening to a master of the craft at the peek of his skill.

Enjoy and remember it's all scientific, mystic/ You know the Earth and the stars/ Don't hesitate to say you heard it from Nas.

Hi-Tek - "Music For Life" (feat. J Dilla, NaS, Common, Busta Rhymes & Marsha Ambrosius)

I'm dead tired and I've got one last final tomorrow morning separating me from freedom, so I'm going to make my one post of the night count.  This is perhaps my favorite song off of one of my favorite sophomore albums of all time.  Like most other producer-turned-rappers' projects (*ahem*...Mr. West), Hi-Tek's Hi-Teknology 2: The Chip at times relies to heavily on guest artists, but the Cincinnati artist holds his own on this final track despite solid efforts from legends Nas and Common.  "Music For Life" is beautiful from top to bottom and even manages to sneak in a cameo by the late, great, J Dilla by way of the saved voicemails at either end of the song.

Peace, Love, & Hip Hop,

Nas & Damian Marley - "In His Own Words" (Feat. Stephen Marley)

With the proliferation of the internet the music leaking has inevitably become a Pandora's Box that, despite the best efforts of the music industry, cannot be resealed.  Leaks are a touchy subject in today's music community.  On the one hand, many upcoming artists have embraced the internet and leaked entire albums and mixtapes before releasing their proper debuts in order to build among a national audience that would be much less accessible without the internet.  The staples of this route include Lupe Fiasco and Wale, who released three and five mixtapes respectively prior to their proper debut.

Nasir Jones - "Dance"

Nas is better known for his legendary debut, Illmatic.  For his great-but-not-quite-classic It Was Written, and his epic feud with Jay-Z and the resulting battle album, Stillmatic.  In recent years, Nasty Nas' work has been slightly sub-Nas and has failed to live up to the hype and controversy generated by his album names (Hip Hop Is Dead, N****r).  Here's hoping that his upcoming album with Damian Marley, will be a return to form for the legend, but in the mean time, for this Mother's Day, it's time to take a look at one of Nas' better, less heralded albums, God's Son.

Jay-Z, Nas, & The Notorious B.I.G. - "Who's The Best?"

This song has been around for a while.  To give you an idea of just how long it's been, I originally copped this when I was still using Limewire.  It's off of DJ Mello & DJ Cinema's Talk of NY mixtape that dropped back in '06 (not that old, but in terms of internet time that's an eternia).  One of the best (of many) mash-ups of the three greatest New York emcees of all time.

Scarface - "On My Block" X "In Between Us" f. Nas & Tanya Herron

I'm a little ashamed that it took me this long to get around to Houston legend, Scarface.  Over the course of his illustrious career, the Geto Boys member has been one of the most consistent and critically acclaimed emcees.  As far as best albums of the past decade, you can't go past the top-5 without mentioning The Fix.  His 2002 classic is widely considered to be one of the best albums of all time and these two songs are my personal favorite tracks off the LP.

Nas - "The Message" (prod. Trackmasters)

I'm sure some have you have noticed my absence over the past week and a half or so.  I apologize for this.  I've been settling back into school and a heavier course load.  In light of my schedule this semester I'm going to have to decrease the amount of posts.  Thus, the new format on the blog: (about) two posts a day, one giving shine to an older song and the other featuring a new song/artist/mixtape.

NaS feat. Lauryn Hill - "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)"

Today was the first time I'd heard this song in a while and it made my day.  Not much has to be said about it as it is a certified classic off of Nasir Jones' sophomore album (the very solid It Was Written).  It's one of my favorite songs by one of the greatest of all time and serves as a reinterpritation of John Lennon's "Imagine" over an interpolation of Kurtis Blow's song of the same name.  Classic.

Peace, Love, & NaS,
Nasty Noah

Nasty Nas - 1991 Demo Tape

Nasir Jones aka Nas aka God's Son aka Nasty Nas is one of the undisputed legends of the genre.  Hip Hop albums will forever be classified as pre-Illmatic and post-Illmatic.  For all of you hip hop heads out there, I thought you might be interested in this pre-Illmatic demo tape that I just came across.  The sound quality isn't the best and some of the rhymes are recycled on his proper 1994 debut, but this is a piece of hip hop history.  Even at this point in his career, he's still lyrically deadly (it kinda reminds me of Eminem circa "Infinite").  As a bonus, I've included the first track Nas ever laid a verse on.  Coming off Main Source's Breaking Atoms, Nas (before he dropped the "Nasty") absolutely kills "Live At The Barbeque" (you'll probably recognize Nas' verse as the very same one sampled in the background of the intro to Illmatic).  Enjoy.

Peace, Love, & Hip Hop,
Nasty Noah

Drake, Jay-Z, & Nas - Successful (DJ Noodles Remix)

I'm not the biggest fan of Drake, but this is an interesting mash-up of his "Successful" and the Nas-assisted "Success" off of Jay's American Gangster.  Personally, I view it as a downgrade from the latter, but I know some of you will appreciate it.

A Hip Hop 101 Aloha

I guess this post is a hello and and a goodbye.  I'm headed back East to NYC for my second year at school (so drop me a line if you're in the city).  So, even though it's not where you're from, it's where you're at, I'm kind of inbetween right now, so I'm going to drop you two tracks from artists from both of my homes.  The first is by Seattle's KnowMads.  It's called "Home," the opening track off of their sophomore album, and one of my favorite songs about going away/coming home.  The second track needs no introduction as it is Nas' classic "N.Y. State Of Mind" off his debut Illmatic.

Peace, Love, & Hip Hop,
NY-Bound Noah

"Home"

PH (The Artist Formerly Known As Pumpkinhead) - My Era (No Skinny Jeans Allowed)

I'm sorry to say that this is the first work I've heard form PH (I obviously haven't been as up on my hip hop knowledge as I'd like to be).  This mixtape features the Brooklyn MC (who's been around since the mid-90's) and other current underground artists rhyming over classic 90's instrumentals from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Nasty NaS, and Souls of Mischief.

The boy brings some lyrical heat and comes close to matching if not exceeding the original artists.  The first five tracks are hot, particularly his remake of Nas' "Halftime," which those of you who, like me, know every word to the original will recognize how closely he stays to the original lyrics while still reinventing the classic.  For the fifth track, Kyle Lucas drops by to assist on the remake of the classic Souls of Mischief song "93 'Til Infinity."  The mixtape gets a little sluggish at tracks six and seven, but PH picks it back up again with an amazing first verse over Erule's classic West Coast gem "Listen Up."  My favorite track off of the mixtape might be the remix of the classic ATCQ "Scenario Remix".  The last five tracks finish as strong as the first five started, ending with the slow-tempo, yet heavy hitting J Sinnastah-assisted "Walk in New York."

For those of you that are fans of Golden Age hip hop, this 2dopeboyz.com and DJ Haze co-signed mixtape is a must have.  Hit the link below for the download link.
